About Fundación Reforestemos

Who is “Fundación Reforestemos”?

Fundación Reforestemos was born after the last major fire that occurred in the Torres del Paine National Park, in December 2011, which destroyed more than 17 thousand hectares, under the name of Reforestemos Patagonia. After the tragic forest fires of 2017, the foundation underwent an expansion process, where its new identity was defined as Fundación Reforestemos, in order to take care of the great task of restoring other areas damaged by the catastrophic fires.

This is an initiative that manages public and private support to organize actions and projects that contribute to the care, recovery and valorization of areas of high ecological value in Chilean Patagonia, one of the main natural heritage sites in the world, and also in recover and protect areas of the central-southern sector of the country.

At 12 years old, the foundation has managed to implement a comprehensive work plan, where reforestation is part of a cycle that begins through environmental education, followed by the protection of areas of high ecological value, the prevention of forest fires , the germination of new species in its own nursery, and finally the planting of new native trees.

How does a virtual forest work?

A virtual forest is a symbolic way to group all your trees in one place. In this, you can plant Patagonian or south central trees, and invite your friends to plant too.

To create a virtual forest you must plant a tree (as a condolence, gift or contribution), once you are within that step by step, you have two options:

  1. Associate trees with an existing forest: Find the virtual forest, select it, and continue the process.
  2. Create a new forest: write the name of the forest, your email, add a description and choose the category to which this forest corresponds (for example: family and friends, schools, etc.). Then continue with the process.

How to obtain the url of your virtual forest?

    1. Go to reforestemos.org and click on the drop-down menu.
    2. Select the “Find a forest or tree” option.
    3. Enter the name of your forest or email with which you created it.
    4. Click on the name of your forest.
    5. You are already in your forest, copy the url and share it with whoever you want.

How to redeem a code?

To redeem a code, we invite you to follow the following step by step:

  1. Go to reforestemos.org and from the menu select “Redeem a code”.
  2. Enter the code and your email.
  3. Select your tree and customize your data.
  4. You can associate your tree with a virtual forest, although if you don’t want to do so, you can skip this step. A virtual forest is the way to virtually gather all your trees in one place. In this, you can plant Patagonian or South
  5. Central trees and invite your friends to plant too.
  6. At the end, you will be able to see the reforestation certificate with the exact coordinates where the tree will be planted and a geo-referenced link to Google Maps so you can locate it. You will have the option to download, print or share the certificate on social networks, you will also receive a copy in your email.

What do I do if my code doesn’t work?

If the code you received does not work, contact our team through this website in the “contact” section or by email [email protected].

About our projects

How can I physically go plant trees?

If you are interested in planting your own trees and would like to participate in our reforestations, we invite you to participate in our native reforestation citizen volunteers. To apply, you must be attentive to an upcoming call process, which we carry out through our website and social networks.

Also, you can register here, so you will be in our base and we will send you the information directly.

The reason behind the price of each tree

A lot of work is needed for each tree: from the search and evaluation of the pedological, ecological and bioclimatic conditions that finally give technical viability to a plantation site; until the execution of the project itself, which involves purchasing and moving the plants, fertilization, trampling, planting, irrigation systems, weed control, installation of individual protectors and fences. In addition, the monitoring and follow-up that we do up to 5 years after the plantation is completed.

Each area has different characteristics and needs, so trees have different values. These vary, in most cases, depending on the costs of clearing invasive species, installing fences, and complex slope sites. In the case of the Andean Araucanía, this is due to the low availability of plants with genetic material from the area, and the need to carry out specific activities to collect, nursery, and produce plants with genetics from the same reserve.

How do I know my tree will actually be planted?

Once you make your contribution, you will receive an email that certifies the planting, indicating the exact coordinates where your tree will be located through a geo-referenced link on Google Maps.

Also, you can review our technical planting reports here.

Who assures me that the money from the tree will really be used for that purpose?

Fundación Reforestemos is a non-profit organization, audited by an external entity –PKF Auditores- to ensure that no type of use of profits is generated by people or companies. Donations have NO other purpose than this. Furthermore, the spirit of not profiting from this campaign is enshrined in the agreements signed with Conaf, Fundación Imagen de Chile, Universidad de Chile, Sustainability and Climate Change Agency, while it also has the sponsorship of the Ministry of the Environment and the United Nations Development Programme.

Where will the trees be planted?

The places used for reforestation can be state Protected Wild Areas, as well as private protected areas that ensure the care, conservation and recovery of biodiversity. Other sites where trees could be allocated are fiscal areas of high ecological value and/or areas of importance to communities.

What species of trees will be planted?

The species to be planted are defined based on the climatic, soil and ecological conditions of the forest ecosystem to be recovered. The objective is to begin a process that allows the new forest to recover its functions and ecological dynamics typical of a healthy ecosystem.

Currently, we work in three macro-zones: southern, southern and central. In all of them, colonizing species are used in the first instance, that is, species that have adapted to be pioneers in ecosystems that have suffered a disturbance, for example the removal of the forest.

In the southern area or Patagonia, lenga, coigüe and ñirre are mainly used. While, in the south-central zone, we work with a gradient of species that range from more xerophytic species such as quillay, liter, huingán, maitén, molle and peumo, to species typical of more southern latitudes such as oak, coihue, canelo, lingue, raulí and notro.

Why do we use these species?

All the plants used in reforestation projects correspond to species native to Chilean forests, which is why they are adapted to the geographical, climatic and soil conditions of Chile. Furthermore, species that have co-evolved with other plant and animal species, constituting ecological relationships in balance with the environment.

Where do these trees come from?

For each reforestation project, a supplier nursery is selected that produces plants according to the type of project and that has the necessary species to carry it out. In the case of Patagonia, since 2023 we have our own nursery, which was created as a solution to the shortage of plant production in the area and with which we project 80 thousand plants per year for our projects. On the other hand, strategic actions are also considered based on the distance to the reforestation area, or the existence of plant donations.

How do you define where the trees will be planted?

The areas to be recovered are defined based on the context of the place. Some of the elements that are considered are: need for recovery, ease of access, organization of the area, risks, proximity to water in case of irrigation, etc. In each case, forestry experts will review the technical and operational aspects in detail.

Who will plant the trees?

The trees will be planted under the direction of our forestry team, who have vast experience in forestry. We have two types of planting, these can be done in volunteer work assisted by monitors – when they are small volumes – and when we face large plantations, these are carried out with contracting companies that carry out native plantations under the requested standards. In both cases, Reforestemos takes a leading role at all times, supervising that it is executed correctly.

Who will care for the tree during its life?

Reforestemos periodically carries out maintenance and monitoring work on the projects carried out, in order to check the performance and evolution of the plants. Given that the vast majority of plantation sites are owned by the Treasury – in charge of surveillance by Conaf – this is the entity in charge of protecting the plants and ensuring their development on land belonging to protected wild areas. . Regarding other lands, each entity is in charge, through its commitment and signing of an agreement, to ensure the care of these new plantations. However, as Reforestemos, we carry out periodic monitoring of all our plantations to check the performance and evolution of the plants.

Review here the details of the studies, work and monitoring carried out.

How will plants protect from natural threats?

Depending on the context of the planting area, there are likely to be certain threats to the trees to be established. One of the most common damages in reforestation projects corresponds to herbivory (cattle, rabbits, hares, etc.). To do this, Reforestemos analyzes case by case the need for individual plant protection, protection in groups of plants, perimeter fencing, among others, in order to ensure correct establishment and initial growth of the plants.

Reforestation zones in protected wild areas are identified together with Conaf, an institution with which the type of protection that the plants will have is also defined, depending on the area where they are located and the natural threats they must face. Thus, two types of plantation have been identified: by conglomerates, that is, protected by wire mesh fences with the necessary height and depth to prevent the entry of hares. And with shelters, that is, with individual protections to avoid predation by other animals. In other areas, Fundación Reforestemos finances the construction of protections to protect trees from herbivory and carries out studies in conjunction with the University of Chile to carry out monitoring plots and evaluate yields with statistically valid sampling.

Do these trees produce carbon credits?

For a project to produce carbon credits, several requirements must be met, such as baseline studies, sequestration studies, accreditation and additionality, among others. Fundación Reforestemos is not financed through the sale of carbon credits, but rather through other means, it is not considered a project to reduce greenhouse emissions, since the nature of the campaign is not within those standards.
