We are facing an alarming situation: last fire season was the second deadliest in the world, highlighted by the emergency in Valparaíso. In the past two decades, the central-southern region has lost 500,000 hectares of native forest, while more than 72% of the territory suffers from drought and 27% is at risk of desertification. With 99.7% of fires caused by humans and 60% occurring in urban-rural interface areas, it is urgent that we take action to prevent future disasters and protect our ecosystems.
We built firebreaks, opened roads, and established two helipads to facilitate access for brigades during emergencies, ensuring a swift response to fires.
In our post-fire restoration plan, we have organized volunteer days to carry out preventive forestry tasks, removing debris and waste and preparing the land for reforestation.
During the fire emergency in Valparaíso for the 2024 season, we provided support to firefighting brigades through the donation of essential supplies, equipment, and necessary tools to address the crisis.
During the summer season each year, we prepare the reforestations we have carried out in Bosque Santiago to tackle high temperatures by creating basins to take advantage of available water, removing dry material that could ignite a fire, and replacing protective covers.
Thanks to the Reforestemos Nursery, the most advanced in Patagonia, we collect genetic material from species that are under conservation status to ensure their future reproduction is not at risk in the event of fires.
