The task of protecting Chile is enormous, we need your help to prevent fires!

We are facing an alarming situation: last fire season was the second deadliest in the world, highlighted by the emergency in Valparaíso. In the past two decades, the central-southern region has lost 500,000 hectares of native forest, while more than 72% of the territory suffers from drought and 27% is at risk of desertification. With 99.7% of fires caused by humans and 60% occurring in urban-rural interface areas, it is urgent that we take action to prevent future disasters and protect our ecosystems.

Our work

Our approach is based on the implementation of various preventive strategies, including:

Education and awareness campaign

We develop awareness activities to educate the public about fire prevention and responsible behavior in high-risk areas.

Donation of supplies to brigades

Support through the provision of tools, equipment, and essential supplies to combat fires.

Preventive forestry

We carry out activities to modify, organize, or remove plant waste to prevent the presence of combustible materials.

Construction of firebreaks

We establish and maintain strategic firebreaks to contain the spread of fire.

Impacts

We have worked in various areas of high ecological value, highlighting the following:

Cerro Caracol Metropolitan Park

Preventive forestry actions, such as clearing blackberry and acacia shrubs, thinning trees, pruning branches, and removing debris to reduce the risk of fires.

Nonguén National Park

We built firebreaks, opened roads, and established two helipads to facilitate access for brigades during emergencies, ensuring a swift response to fires.

Viña del Mar Botanical Garden

In our post-fire restoration plan, we have organized volunteer days to carry out preventive forestry tasks, removing debris and waste and preparing the land for reforestation.

Emergency in the V Region

During the fire emergency in Valparaíso for the 2024 season, we provided support to firefighting brigades through the donation of essential supplies, equipment, and necessary tools to address the crisis.

Santiago Metropolitan Park

During the summer season each year, we prepare the reforestations we have carried out in Bosque Santiago to tackle high temperatures by creating basins to take advantage of available water, removing dry material that could ignite a fire, and replacing protective covers.

Patagonia

Thanks to the Reforestemos Nursery, the most advanced in Patagonia, we collect genetic material from species that are under conservation status to ensure their future reproduction is not at risk in the event of fires.

And what actions can you take to prevent these incidents?

If you are outdoors:

Camp only in designated areas.

Do not throw away matches or cigarette butts.

If you use a stove, it should be protected from the wind and placed where it won’t tip over.

Do not place the stove under a tree or near shrubs and grasslands.

Avoid keeping flammable materials near the stove and keep an eye on it.

Do not leave matches, lighters, or flammable materials within reach of children.

Take back any trash generated during your visit.

In National Parks, Reserves, and Natural Monuments, making fires is strictly prohibited.
