Located near the town of Cholila in the province of Chubut, this natural area spans approximately 64,155 hectares, encompassing the upper and part of the middle basin of the Tigre River, which flows into the western end of Lake Cholila. This zone forms the headwaters of the Futaleufú River basin and complements the protection provided to that basin by Los Alerces National Park. It is one of three new reserves established in 2018, alongside Huemul Hielo and Río Engaño, joining existing protected areas to bring the total protected forested area to 565,000 hectares.
Nacientes del Río Tigre joined the more than 500 protected areas in Argentina, aiming to preserve and protect its landscape, natural, and cultural heritage, as well as ensure the protection, restoration, conservation, and sustainable management of its existing forests. Safeguarding the area’s vegetation also means protecting the major glaciers found within its boundaries. In fact, 36 glaciers covering approximately 2,540 hectares have been identified in this territory, with the Planchón Nevado Glacier being the largest at 465 hectares. This basin is the province’s second most important reserve of solid water.
The ecosystem of the Nacientes del Río Tigre Natural Protected Area has been declared a priority conservation area and is recognized as a center of genetic diversity for the alerce (Fitzroya cupressoides). Its forests feature significant stands of alerce, both in area and pristine condition. It also serves as a refuge for native species such as coihue, cypress, lenga, and laura. Furthermore, the reserve hosts species classified in critical conservation status, including the huemul deer, considered endangered.
In 2015, a vast portion of the native Patagonian Andean forests in northwestern Chubut Province burned, becoming the largest ecological tragedy in recent history in Argentine Patagonia. In this reserve alone, nearly 29,000 hectares of forest were destroyed, causing a major loss of biodiversity in the Nacientes del Río Tigre ecosystem. The most severely affected species were coihue and cypress, as they lack the ability to regenerate after fires, causing much of their presence to vanish. Furthermore, given the scale of the wildfire, soil seed banks were also destroyed, having no natural adaptation to survive such extreme heat.
We have planted 65,000 coihue and cypress seedlings using the enrichment method, arranged in clusters or small groves. Additionally, we mimicked the natural regeneration and establishment process of these core native species (coihue and cypress), planting them sheltered from direct solar radiation and wind.
Audiovisual footage was recorded and will be available for future productions, aiming to highlight the value of native forests and the environmental services they provide to society, as well as the negative impacts caused primarily by forest fires.
