Fundación Reforestemos is expanding its work to Colombia, joining local initiatives dedicated to protecting its biodiversity.
This new step in Latin America has been made possible thanks to public-private partnerships that connect organizations, companies, and communities around a common cause.
Our work covers two distinct ecosystems: the tropical dry forest and the high-Andean forest–paramo, with restoration solutions tailored to the characteristics and needs of each region.
Colombia is home to nearly 10% of the planet’s biodiversity and is recognized as one of the most biodiverse countries in the world.
Its territory brings together tropical rainforests, dry forests, mountain ranges, paramos, wetlands, and savannas, which support an extraordinary diversity of species and play a fundamental role for communities and climate balance.
Biodiversity: Colombia ranks first globally in bird and amphibian diversity, second in plants, and fifth in mammals.
Natural Ecosystems: Nearly 68.7% of its mainland territory retains natural ecosystems, which are essential for protecting biodiversity, soils, and water sources.
A Regional Perspective: Latin America accounts for about 23% of the world’s forests and approximately 40% of globally identified species. Its restoration requires collaboration and a vision that transcends borders.

The cotton-top tamarin is a small primate endemic to Colombia and is critically endangered, primarily due to habitat loss and fragmentation and illegal wildlife trafficking.
Tití Project has been working for decades to protect this species and the forests it needs to survive. Its model combines scientific research, environmental education, ecosystem restoration, and community engagement.
One of its main lines of action is the recovery and connection of the tropical dry forest, one of Colombia’s most threatened ecosystems. Through the restoration of degraded areas and the creation of biological corridors, the project seeks to connect forest fragments and expand the available habitat for the cotton-top tamarin and many other species.
Fundación Reforestemos will contribute 1,000 trees to this process, helping to restore the forest, improve its connectivity, and strengthen a conservation effort that integrates nature and local communities.

Al Verde Vivo Foundation works on the restoration of El Diluvio Nature Reserve, located in Villapinzón, Cundinamarca. This 113-hectare area is situated in a transition zone between the high-Andean forest and the paramo, within the corridor where the Bogotá River is born.
The reserve is home to nearly 280 native species, 30 of them endemic, as well as species of frailejones and various fauna. Its forests play a fundamental role in biodiversity conservation and in regulating the water supply for the municipality of Villapinzón.
Historically, the territory was affected by agricultural, livestock, and extractive activities, which led to the degradation and fragmentation of its vegetation. In recent years, Fundación Al Verde Vivo has driven its recovery through research, monitoring, and the propagation of native species in a high-mountain nursery, adding more than 50,000 plants to the reserve’s restoration processes.
Through Reforestemos, we will support an assisted active restoration model, which combines the planting of high-Andean forest species, the strengthening of natural regeneration, and the recovery of ecological connectivity. These actions aim to restore degraded areas and strengthen essential ecosystem services, particularly the hydrological regulation of the upper Bogotá River basin.
