Located in Puerto Bertrand, 137 km from Chile Chico in the Aysén Region, the Vista Baker project is part of Armoniza, an initiative that promotes an eco-habitable model based on conservation, restoration, and community as its key pillars. Thanks to its application to our Conservation Program—which supports ecological restoration on private lands belonging to small landowners or properties with a Real Right of Conservation (DRC)—we are working to restore and protect its native forest.
Right in the heart of Patagonia and along the banks of the Baker River, its location makes it a key place for the preservation of Patagonian native forests and the environmental balance of the area.
Native forests in the Aysén region are of great ecological importance and offer a series of vital ecosystem services, such as the provision of food and water; climate, erosion, carbon, pest, and disease regulation; and cultural and recreational services. These forests, which largely contain three species of the Nothofagus genus—Lenga (beech), Ñirre, and Coigüe—play a crucial role in the functionality of these ecosystems and, consequently, in the provision of these services.
Regarding water resources, the Baker River is a vital source of fresh water, fed by the melting ice of the Northern Patagonian Ice Field. This steady flow is crucial for aquifer recharge and local climate regulation. In addition, its discharge provides water for human and agricultural activities in the region, supporting communities and adjacent ecosystems; consequently, its preservation is essential to ensure the environmental health and socio-economic well-being of the Aysén Region.
Furthermore, Patagonia’s ecosystems play a crucial role in the fight against climate change. Its forests, wetlands, and peatlands act as carbon sinks that absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it as biomass, making them the best ally for global climate regulation and air purification. In fact, a recent study led by Chilean researchers concluded that the national parks of Chilean Patagonia store nearly twice as much carbon per hectare as Amazonian forests.
The Vista Baker Project seeks to have a significant impact on the local community. With its eco-habitable model, it aims to maintain land productivity and foster synergy with local stakeholders. By integrating innovative regenerative sheep farming techniques managed by local residents, the project aspires to contribute to the economy and establish a mutual support network where shared values of conservation and environmental respect promote common well-being and the protection of its natural resources.
Chilean Patagonia experienced one of the largest fires in the country’s history during its colonization era, when vast tracts of ancient native forests were burned to clear land for agriculture and livestock development—all at a time when deforestation was synonymous with economic growth for the region. Deforestation, coupled with agricultural and livestock activities, triggered an accelerated soil erosion process, which was combated as an emergency measure by planting vast areas of exotic species.
While the forests in the Aysén Region have been recovering over time, there is also evidence of degradation and fragmentation, which directly impacts the habitat of the wildlife living in these forests. That is why restoring and protecting the native forest is vital for the region.
To date, we have planted 16,600 native trees belonging to species typical of Patagonian forests—such as Coigüe, Lenga, and Ñirre—across approximately 13 hectares.
100-plant cluster system, planted at an average spacing of 2.5 to 3 meters. A manual clearing/cultivation of the planting site measuring 30 cm wide by 30 cm long and 30 cm deep was implemented, allowing plants to better adapt to the new terrain and enabling roots to expand.
As in all our reforestation projects, we will monitor the plantation during years 1, 2, 3, 7, and 10 to evaluate plant survival, growth rate, and establishment in the field. Furthermore, these monitoring sessions can be complemented by technical site visits to assess the overall condition of the plantation.
“The Right of Conservation is a real right consisting of the power to conserve the environmental heritage of a property or specific attributes or functions thereof. This right is established freely and voluntarily by the property owner for the benefit of a specific natural or legal person” (LAW 20,930). In simple terms, it is a legal tool that seeks to promote private sector participation in the conservation of Chile’s environmental heritage.
