Patagonia National Park

The Patagonia Parks Network (Red de Parques de la Patagonia) was created as a land conservation project for Chilean Patagonia, ranking second in South America for carbon storage, after the Amazon. Consequently, Patagonia National Park—located within this network—functions as a biological corridor that ensures the conservation of ecosystems, particularly Nothofagus forests.

FLORA

According to Fundación Rewilding Chile, the plant formations of the Aysén Patagonian steppe reach their fullest expression in this park. They also highlight the vast expanses of Patagonian Andean forests found in the higher elevations and slopes near water bodies, which mostly consist of three species of the Nothofagus genus: lenga (lenga beech), ñirre (Antarctic beech), and coigüe (coihue beech). Annual rainfall can reach up to 200 millimeters, sustaining dense forests that shelter 370 species of vascular plants.

FAUNA

All of the region’s native wildlife—from Andean condors to guanacos and pumas—can be found in this park, which also protects vast stretches of habitat for the huemul deer. This iconic species of our country is Endangered, with only 1,500 individuals remaining across Chile (70%) and Argentina (30%). Fundación Rewilding Chile is currently carrying out its Wildlife Program here, focusing on restoring ecosystems degraded by overgrazing, monitoring native fauna, and helping boost their populations.

THE CHALLENGE

Between 1920 and 1940, during the colonization era, the region suffered the worst blow in its history due to intentional fires, where vast expanses of ancient native forests were burned to clear land for agriculture and livestock. In Aysén, approximately 2.8 million hectares (ha) were burned, representing 50% of its lenga forests. In Patagonia National Park, two wildfires have destroyed 4,000 ha over the past 10 years. The most recent occurred in the winter of 2021, affecting an area of 1,273 ha within the park, as well as part of an adjacent property where approximately 150 ha of native forest burned.

OUR WORK

In an effort to recover and restore the native forest devastated by wildfires, Fundación Reforestemos is carrying out a massive reforestation project in Patagonia National Park, targeting 130,000 native trees. In the first phase, 10,000 trees were planted, featuring two species: Nothofagus pumilio (lenga) and Nothofagus antarctica (ñirre).

The planting methodology utilizes clusters of 100 seedlings spaced 20 meters apart. This technique mimics the natural regeneration behavior of trees in the wild, where they grow in dense groups within small areas. This clustering allows them to shelter each other from the wind, improve soil quality, and enhance nutrient availability.
